These July afternoons find us cutting rest time short and, when we should be enjoying the cool indoors, venturing out into the heat of the day to go to swimming lessons. While Boo has his lesson Tukes and I find ourselves with some time on our hands.
We must stay on the health club's premises but off of the pool deck so we've had fun at the adjacent lake and little dock. We take bread to feed the fish and turtles. Tukes likes to throw in whole pieces, then he laughs and laughs while the fish scramble about in a feeding frenzy. When we finish he waves and yells, "Bye bye fiss, bye bye tortles."
Some afternoons it is too hot to be out in the sun... or it rains... so we wait in the lobby. The sweet older ladies at the gym like to strike up conversations with Tukes. "What is your name?" "Pop," he always tells them his name is Pop. "How old are you" "Dos" or "Two." One day last week he got really friendly with an attentive lady and told her that he had a loose tooth... then he opened his mouth wide so that she could inspect his teeth for herself. A loose tooth?! Oh my, how he wants to be like his big brother!
And speaking of big brother, Boo is getting along swimmingly in this endeavor of learning to swim. By nature he's a sinker... he even asked me the other day, "Mommy, why do I sink?" With scarcely an ounce of fat on his thin frame his body mass index is composed almost entirely of dense muscle... so he sinks. I remind him that learning to swim is like learning to ride a bike, and so he continues to practice... while trying not to sink... trusting that one day it will click.
