Charlie

Late Tuesday afternoon Charlie telephoned. He told Khaki, my mother-in-law, that first thing on Wednesday morning he would be gassing up the Lincoln Town Car, leaving his dog with the vet, and driving himself from west Tennessee for a visit. Charlie is 86.

Who is Charlie?

The professor's beloved late grandfather didn't have a brother but he had Charlie, his first cousin, who was like a brother... they were best friends. The family resemblance is strong; the shared mannerisms a bit uncanny. He has a sharp mind and a keen ear, and is full of stories and smiles and jokes. He flew 25 missions on a B-24 in the Pacific theater of World War II, a fact that fascinates and intrigues my firstborn. What a dear, happy, lovable man!

Charlie is a recent widower. This week we've been loving on him and filling him with good food while enjoying his company immensely.
