A charming classic
When the professor arrived home from California earlier this week he brought a book for the boys. Entitled This is San Francisco it is by Czech author and illustrator Miroslav Sasek and was originally created in 1962. This book is part of his series of children's travel guides, which include such titles as This is Venice, This is Paris, and This is New York. In a charming and distinct style, Sasek highlights famous and noteworthy sights around San Francisco, including Lombard Street, the cable cars, Fishermen's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown.
In 2003 the series was reissued with each book containing annotations about how the locations have changed since the books were first published. Original editions are highly sought after and very collectible.
The boys love the illustrations and I must add that the simple graphics are beautiful. Boo has especially enjoyed learning all about San Francisco. It is a refreshing vintage treat for people of all ages -- the other night I caught the professor reading it after the boys were in bed.
