"Spotlight on Peru"

Perhaps you remember our dear friends who are prayerfully and excitedly looking forward to being united with their sweet baby girl who is waiting for them in Peru. Please continue to pray for this family as the anticipation continues.

Yesterday I enjoyed reading the following report about Peru and the work of Christ's church there; it was an insert in our church bulletin.

The 8.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Peru's southern coast in August -- killing over 500 people and leaving 200,000 homeless -- was an overwhelming blow to this struggling country. Nearly 50 percent of Peru's population live below the poverty line, and the World Health Organization estimates that 31 percent of Peru's children are chronically malnourished. In Lima, Latin America's fifth largest city, more than 60 percent of the population live in slums, and the number of street children, who are often subject to abuse and exploitation, is on the rise.

In the midst of their trials, many Peruvians are turning to faith in Jesus, and evangelical churches are experiencing explosive growth. Please pray for Peru: Give thanks for the work that ministries have done in Jesus' name to care for the victims of the recent earthquake. Pray that president Alan Garcia would be wise in implementing programs that honor and aid the helpless and oppressed. Pray that the Christian churches in Peru will continue to grow and become more effective in their outreach to the people's spiritual as well as temporal needs.

Please, also, pray that the Lord will hasten the happy day when this father, mother, and daughter can be physically united.
